Six Assin Schools Score Zero Percent In BECE

Six schools in the Assin Central Municipality of the Central Region, scored zero percent in the 2015 Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE).

The schools are Nyankomasi M/A JHS, Gold Coast Camp M/A JHS, Fosu Catholic ‘A’ JHS, Fosu M/A ‘B’ JHS, Bereku Nikyiso JHS, and Nduaso M/A JHS.

Ms Enyonam Afi Amafuga, Municipal Director of Education, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Assin Fosu said of the 148 candidates including 78 females who sat for the examination in the six schools, none qualified to be placed in Senior High Schools, technical or vocational schools.

The Municipality registered 2,970 candidates of which 2,756 wrote the examination

Ms Amefugah said 10 girls could not write the exams because eight got pregnant, whilst four boys stopped schooling after registration.

She attributed the poor results to among others, teacher-absenteeism, and lack of logistics for proper supervision, which constituted a major drawback on quality education delivery in the municipality.

Ms Amefugah said the municipal educational oversight committee had put in place measures to reverse the situation and appealed to teachers posted to the area to take their work seriously and not let their quest to upgrade their knowledge at the universities render the classrooms empty.

She said the directorate was deliberating on how to put measures like teacher promotion, extra classes, Best Teacher Award, welfare services as well as sanctions on recalcitrant teachers in place to improve the situation.

The Educational director advised students to study hard to make government’s effort to promote quality education meaningful and urged parents to ensure that their children were at home to assist them to learn instead of watching films.

Ms Amefugah further urged the government and other benevolent institutions to provide the requisite tools to help promote education at the Junior High Schools.
