Heavy Downpour Wreaks Havoc At Dormaa Ahenkro

Strong winds accompanying torrential rains that swept across parts of Dormaa Ahenkro in the Brong-Ahafo Region during the last week-end, has destroyed properties running into several millions of Ghana Cedis.

Many people whose numbers have not been given yet, as a result have also been displaced while electricity supply and telephony to most of the affected households have been disrupted.

The stormy rains that lasted for barely an hour, in addition ripped-off roofs of numerous apartments, uprooted giant mahoghany trees along the Stadium Junction Road and blew off wooden structures (including lotto kiosks), sited along road sides, leaving in its wake scattered leaves and refuse.

There were no deaths, though a few casualties were recorded, but it is not clear how many households have been affected, while no cost has immediately been put to the unquantified properties so far ravaged.

However, most residents of Nkyenkyekye, one of the worst affected communities, when the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited, "Good Samaritans" who rushed to the scene to offer help, were seen busily retrieving some of their household belongings like refrigerators, mattresses, sets of furniture and some electronic gadgets among other things.

These were packed into trucks as they made off to put up with friends and relatives in nearby communities where the impact was minimal.

One of the victims who gave his name only as Mr. Gyamfi told the GNA that he had the roofs of his five-room apartment blown-off and added that her daughter’s right hand is now seriously injured.

Brobbey Marfo, 22, a drug seller with Yebcons Chemical Store, also had his smallest right finger cut off as he tried to shut his shop’s gate during the storm.

Brobbey  stated that the strong winds pulled drugs and medicines, some in liquid solutions in bottled containers from wooden shelves down breaking them instantly and he had  to rush to hospital where he was given tetanus injection.

Another victim, Mr Samuel Boadang, a retired staff of Ministry of Health (MOH) who also has a roofless residential facility said he decided to put up his four- room brick apartment shortly after retirement in 2010 and "I never imagined this disaster could struck six years down the line".

The VIP stand and the Press Box of the Osagyefo Oseadeyo Agyemang Badu I Sports Stadium was also not left out and had portions of its roofing ripped.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Chief Executive, the Municipal Police Commander and the NADMO officials had already visited the scene to share the pain of the loss with the victims.
