Teenage Mother Murders Baby Girl

The brutal murder of a four-month old baby girl, allegedly committed by her 18-year-old mother, has thrown the predominantly farming community of Aboabo Number Two, near Fomena in the Ashanti Region, into a state of shock. Akua Nyarkoa allegedly cut the throat of her four-month old baby girl with knife, and explained that �something� had been urging her to end the life of the baby. The teenager, a junior high school (JHS) dropout, is now on remand in prison custody after preparing before the District Magistrate�s court at Fomena on a provisional charge of murder. Police Public Relations oOffcer of the Ashanti Region, Chief Inspector Yussif Mohammed Tanko, told the Daily Graphic yesterday that Nyarkoa lived with her mother at Aboabo Number Two. The incident happened when Nyarkoa�s mother had left for the market to sell bread. Chief Inspector Tanko said on September 16, 2009, the police at Fomena had information that a woman had killed her child at Aboabo Number 2 and as they were preparing to arrest her, two young men brought her to the Fomena police station. She was subsequently arrested. According to Chief Inspector Tanko, during interrogation, the young woman explained that any time she saw the baby, �something� told her to cut it throat. Consequently, Nyakoa was arraigned and remanded imprison custody. Meanwhile the remains of the baby have been deposited at the New Edubiase Hospital morgue for autopsy.
