Malnutrition, a Threat To Children Survival-Nutritional Consultant

About 60% of the world�s death is due to malnutrition; especially among children. However those children, who survive malnutrition, are frequently sick and suffer from many health and academic conditions. In Ghana 28% of children are stunted with chronic health conditions. The Country Consultant of the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), Mrs.Rosina Abley, made the disclosure at a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday. The GAIN project seeks varied ways to improve upon the nutritional consumption of micro nutrients by the populace especially among women and children. According to Mrs.Abley, about 65% of pregnant women and 78% of children are anaemic due to iodine deficiency. The situation she said, is affecting the intelligence level of Ghanaian children. In his contribution, the Project Manager of the GAIN Project, Mr.Richard Nyumuah, said about 90% of flour and 60% of edible oil on the Ghanaian market, would soon be fortified with vitamin A, iodine and iron, to ensure that, the malnutrition level in the country is reduced. He further added that, the 6 main edible oil importers in the country have been asked to ensure that, their oil imports are fortified with micronutrients.
