Abuakwa North By-Election Was Peaceful Without NDC...
The Acting General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, says the peaceful conduct of the Abuakwa North constituency by-election was because the incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC) did not participate in the polls.
The NDC according to its General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, pulled out of the race on humanitarian grounds, to sympathize with the NPP, over the gruesome murder of its late MP, Joseph Boakye Danquah-Adu.
Speaking after the elections that was won by the NPP’s candidate, John Boadu insisted that the NDC withdrew based on other reasons and not on sympathy grounds as they suggested.
He said the NDC’s Abuakwa North candidate is not a registered voter hence the party’s decision to bow out.
“NDC could not put out a candidate because their candidate is not a registered voter and they are waiting for the limited registration exercise to be opened for him to get registered. He is like Zanetor Rawlings. If there is any by-election in Klottey Korle she can’t contest. So they should not try to cry more than the bereaved.”
“They [NDC] didn’t come and that is why we had a peaceful election. We’ve never had such a peaceful election before; if they were here, we would have seen all kinds of noise, snatching of ballot boxes among others. And I think that this is a behaviour that the NDC must stop,” he added.
NPP secures resounding victory in by-election
The NPP’s Parliamentary Candidate for the area, Gifty Twum Ampofo on Tuesday secured a comfortable victory in the by-elections.
Her widely expected triumph came over challengers, Samuel Frimpong of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) and the United People’s Party’s Isaac Kwarteng. Mrs Twum Ampofo polled 10,033 votes representing 89.60% the total votes cast.
Samuel Frimpong and Isaac Kwartey’s secured 263 votes (2.35%) and 901 votes (8.05%) respectively.
MP’s death necessitated by-election
The by-election was necessitated by the death of the MP for the area, Joseph Boakye Danquah-Adu who was stabbed at his residence in Accra by a teenager in February this year.
