Prez Mahama Promises Development Authority For Voltarians In 2016 Manifesto

President John Dramani Mahama has promised to set up a Sothern Volta Basin Development Authority to execute development projects in the Volta Region. This, he said, is in response to calls from traditional authorities in the Volta Region craving for such authority to harness investments in the area.

The president announced this when he addressed the chiefs and people of Anlodukor at a durbar held in his honour at the Keta Senior High School on Saturday.

President Mahama told the gathering that he has already factored the establishment of the authority in the yet-to-be launched 2016 manifesto of the governing National Democratic Congress for the 2016 general elections.

He described the Southern Volta Basin Development Authority as something “dear to the heart” of the people of the area especially chiefs.

“The National Development Planning Council has been working on the Southern Volta Basin Development Authority and government has decided to set it up…as a result, we have included it in my manifesto for 2017 to 2020. And so this authority is going to be in NDC manifesto for this election that we are going into.”

According to President Mahama, an implementation committee would be set up to oversee the establishment of the Authority.

“We are going to take the first step of doing that by setting up an implementation committee. The implementation committee will be responsible for demarcating the geographical area that shall fall within this authority; and shall be responsible for preparing the legislation that would go to Parliament to give legal backing to this authority.”
