Minister: Thousand Houses A Year For The Next Five Years

The Minister for Works and Housing, Mr. Albert Abongo has hinted that Ghanas housing deficit is currently around five hundred thousand (500,000) houses. He noted that the only way this housing deficit can be wiped off totally is by providing a minimum of one thousand houses a year for the next five years. He admitted that the problem is being compounded as the current demand for housing is rapidly increasing at an average of twenty five thousand houses per annum. The Minister raised the concern in Accra today at the opening of the Annual Seminar of the Valuation and Estate Division of the Ghana Institute of Surveyors. The seminar under the theme The Emerging Project Market: Trends and Practice, brought together about 300 local and international Real Estate Developers and surveyors to deliberate on the current challenges facing Ghanas Housing Industry. Mr. Abongo said the provision of adequate and more affordable houses especially in the urban areas will not only reduce the problem of congestion and its associate calamities but will also create more jobs and greater business opportunities for those in the works and housing industry. He solicited the support of Real Estates Developers surveyors and other practitioners in the industry to help the government minimise the challenges of housing in the country.
