Winneba United Records First Win In Maiden Aboakyer Cup

Winneba United FC has edged closer to booking a place in the finals of the maiden edition of the Aboakyer Cup after managing a slender win over Young Millionaires FC at the Winneba United Park on Sunday.

Although both teams started brightly, none of the sides succeeded in breaking the defence walls of its opponent to secure a goal during full-time resulting in a tight penalty shoot-out which saw the host team, Winneba United FC take home three points.

Many had expected Winneba United to easily carve Young Millionaires FC but the visitors gave a good account of themselves and posed a real threat to the host team as they seemed to have dominated midway into the game.

Winneba United however, bounced back in the second-half of the game but couldn’t make use of the numerous chances they created as goalkeeper of Young Millionaires produced great saves with agility to keep the host team in the game till the end of full-time.

Being the first of its kind, the Aboakyer Cup climaxing on the May 8, 2016, aims to promote unity and peace and create excitement among the people before, during and after the Aboakyer Festival which is slated for May 7.

Competing teams include Suncity FC from Accra, which has been ceded alongside Windy Professionals from Winneba, Spirrows FC from Awutu-Senya and Ahenfo FC from Apam in Group A.

Teams in Group B include host team Winneba United, Young Millionaires from Gomoa-Lome, Items FC from Saltpond and Liverpool Nobles from Winneba.

Chief Executive Officer of Winneba United, James Kofi Annan in a pre-match press conference said, the football competition which has been massively publicised in the media would create awareness around the Aboakyer Festival and draw huge crowds from every part of the country.

“The Aboakyer Cup is gaining momentum in the media and this is an opportunity for sponsors to come on board to support a game that has a huge turn-out. Currently, Nyce Media which is organising the event in partnership with Winneba United, and Run-Off Restaurant at Winneba Junction are our only sponsors,” he added.

Mr Annan noted that the Aboakyer Cup is serving as a unifying force and as such, will not affiliate itself with any of the two Asafo groups.

“Inasmuch as we want to promote the Aboakyer Festival, we would not want to associate with any Asafo Group to mar the beauty of the game,” he said.
