Former President J A Kufour’s harsh criticism of the ruling NDC over their performance of the Mahama led administration appears to have landed him in trouble.

In his reaction to President John Mahama’s recent comment about NDC’s contribution to the development of the Volta region, the former President claimed the plight of Ghanaians have worsened since the NDC took over power in 2009. He argued that NDC has had the lion’s share of governing Ghana since 1992, excluding 11 years of military rule under Flt. Lt Jerry Rawlings.

He cited the $100m Keta Sea Defense project and accused the NDC government of squandering the money for it. The former President added ”We are not blowing our own trumpet, unlike NPP era when Ghanaians living abroad had the desire to come home and work, “this time it’s different; they don’t want to come home.”

 “When we got the chance, there was real development, not the kids’ movies NDC is showing to people now,” he said.

The former President who was speaking during a courtesy call on him by the newly elected MP for Abuakwa North condemned the decision to seek an IMF bailout describing as a manifestation of failure in managing the economy.

But the NDC is not taking his (Mr. Kufuors’s) attack lightly.

General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketsia told Accra based OKAY FM on Friday morning said the NDC said even though he is hesitant to respond to the former president in equal measure he also understands the predicament the former president finds himself. According to the NDC chief Scribe the former president Kufour has been compelled under the circumstances to in his words say something or risk being further sidelined by the Akufo Ado faction. He will therefore take what the former president has said with a pinch of salt since he said it under duress.

“I pity the former president Kufour, he’s under a lot of pressure to talk to please the NPP or risk being ignored, I don’t envy his situation at all because if he doesn’t talk they say he doesn’t like, Nana Addo, and now in his haste to say something to make Akufo Ado happy he’s ended up messing himself up so I will leave it as such,” he said.

Political analysts have said that the former president’s attack on the administration is part of a grand scheme by the NPP to gain an electoral advantage in the Volta Region, the strong hold of the NDC. This is because the NDC appears to be making inroads in the Ashanti Region due to the numerous development projects going on in the region and the fact that the cracks within the party is deepening by the day since Akufo Ado assumed leadership of the party.

The NDC intends to secure one million votes in the Ashanti Region, the NPP’s strong hold in an operation dubbed “Operation one million votes in Ashanti” Therefore the latest utterances by the former president according to critics doesn’t come to them as a surprise at all because it’s all part of the agenda to pitch the people of Volta against the NDC in the region to create apathy amongst the people in order to give an electoral advantage to the NPP. They have further questioned why the NPP have not questioned anything the president has said in other regions the president Mahama has visited so far on his changing lives tour.
