Islamic Organization moves to kick out tribalism in Upper West

The Jamiat Alhadayyat Al-Islamiat, an Islamic organization based in the Upper West Region has launched a campaign to identify and eliminate all activities that promote tribalism in the Region. The organization has therefore proposed the reintroduction of the Upper West Games, which the colonial era used as a key platform for the unification of the various tribes in the area. Alhaji Issah Yussif, Vice-chairman of the organization who was speaking at the launch of the campaign at Wa on Thursday, said the games apart from forging tribal equality, which was fundamental for peaceful coexistence, would also promote discipline among the youth. He called on the Regional House of Chiefs, municipal and district assemblies, as well as Members of Parliament from the area, to set aside some of their funds towards the re-introduction of the games. Alhaji Yussif observed that political appointments were not spared these tribal sentiments, as various tribal groups were often seen and heard calling on whoever was in charge, to appoint their kinsmen to positions of importance in order to enjoy favours. During an open forum most of participants called on the organization to carry the campaign to the campuses of educational institutions in the Region where tribalism was rife.
