Road traffic accidents claimed 508 lives in the first quarter of 2016 nationwide.
Out of that number, 394 were males and 114 were females.
Data from the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) showed a sharp increase compared to 2015’s first quarter statistics, where 395 persons died from road accidents.
In all, 2,903 cases were documented, including 2,687 persons injured, involving 4,569 vehicles.
The records also indicated that a total of 696 pedestrians were knocked down by vehicles.
A regional breakdown of the numbers showed that Brong Ahafo had the highest number of deaths with a figure of 108, followed by the Accra Region, which documented 90 deaths.
Coming in third is the Ashanti Region, which had a total of 78 deaths. The Eastern Region followed fourth with 52 deaths.
The Western Region came in fifth with 41 deaths while the Central Region towed in line with 39 deaths.
Seventh was the Northern Region, with a score of 36.
The Volta Region documented 25 deaths as in the sequence while the Upper East Region also documented 16 deaths.
The Upper West Region came in 10th with 14 deaths. Recording the least number of deaths is Tema Region, which archived nine deaths.
Also, 642 motorcycles were involved in the crashes.
