The acrimony and tension between the youth of Agogo and Fulani herdsmen had refused to go despite the deployment of security officers to restore calm.
The people have vowed not to accept anything short of total eviction of the nomads and their cattle from the area in compliance with a Kumasi High Court order.
Thousands of angry residents of the town on Tuesday defied heavy rainfall to hit the streets to denounce the continued presence of the herdsmen and what they said was the betrayal by the state.
Dressed in red and black, they carried placards with messages like “The state has failed the people of Agogo”, “IGP adaadaa yen (the IGP has deceived us)” and “Nantwie (cattle) must go”.
Police Superintendent Bossman Ohene Boadi, the Konongo Divisional Commander, was on hand to personally make sure that nothing went on wrong.
The demonstrators, after some hours on the streets, converged at the Russia Park, where the Member of Parliament (MP), Mr. Kwadwo Baah Agyemang, and other leaders took turns to address them.
The MP expressed disappointment at the failure of the state to forcibly remove the nomads, four years after a court had ruled that they should be evicted.
He stated that the destruction of food crop farms and water bodies, shooting and killing of the people by the Fulani had not stopped with the deployment of the police and soldiers to the place and demanded that they were withdrawn.
Their presence, he said, had become a drain on the limited resources of the Asante-Akim North District Assembly with about GHȼ270,000.00 already spent on them.
