Bawku Hospital Has Potential Of Becoming A Teaching Hospital
Dr Robert Kugnab–Lam, Upper East Deputy Regional Minister, says Bawku Presbyterian Hospital has the potential of becoming a teaching hospital if the management and staff continue to work hard to maintain the high standards.
The hospital, which has very good human resource, is second to the Tamale Teaching Hospital in terms of workforce and continues to be one of the major referral centres in the country particularly in the areas of obstetrics, gynaecology, orthopaedics, physiotherapy, eye care and general surgery.
In 2015, 126,285 patients visited the hospital’s out-patients department and 20,243 of them were admitted.
Skilled deliveries conducted for the period were 2,727, while 2,104 surgeries were also done successfully.
The Deputy Regional Minister, who is a former Dean of School of Medicine of the University for Development Studies, said this in Bawku, at the handing over ceremony of medical equipment donated by Madam Patience Ama Siegrist, a philanthropist who once worked in the facility with her late husband, Dr Daniel Siegrist in the 1980s.
Dr Kugnab –Lam commended the donor and the Presbyterian Church of Ghana for complementing government’s effort in health delivery.
He entreated the health professionals at the facility to dress appropriately when on duty.
The General Manager of the Presbyterian Health Service –North, Mr Fred Effa-Yeboah, said the items Madam Siegrist donated include 40 electronically operated beds with mattresses, chairs, wheel chairs, tables and bicycles.
The Director of Development and Social Services of the Church, Reverend Daniel E. K. Asante said the Church is currently running 50 health facilities and programmes throughout the country.
He appealed to the government to tar roads in the hospital and leading to the premises.
“The Presbyterian Church of Ghana believes in effective collaboration with political leaders, the district assemblies, Ministry of Health, NGOs, opinion leaders and all who matter in health delivery.
“As we provide the service, we look forward to our key stakeholders to lend us a hand to make our work smooth and effective,” he said.
