Sissala West District records no maternal death this year

The Sissala West District is the only district in the Upper West Region, which recorded no maternal and neonatal deaths from January to August. It however recorded 25 deaths of children under five year, 22 babies weighing less than 2.5 kilograms and 52 malnutrition cases within the same period. Mr. Robert Baka Wavei, District Chief Executive who made this known at Gwollu said 119 teenage pregnancies, 260 births, two cases of tuberculosis and 11 HIV/AIDS infections were also registered within the period. Mr. Wavei was addressing the 2nd ordinary session of the District Assembly on Thursday. He announced that the assembly had allocated one per cent of its share of the District Assemblies� common fund for HIV/AIDS and malaria prevention activities and two per cent for persons with disabilities. He said 20 persons with disabilities had been screened at the Regional Hospital in Wa whilst 18 of them received wheelchairs to facilitate their movement. Mr. Wavei announced that the assembly had pledged one bag of sulphate of ammonia for any person or persons who would voluntarily report a confirmed tuberculosis case to the health authorities in the district. He urged community members to report suspected cases of tuberculosis and other communicable diseases to the health authorities to help check their spread. The District Chief Executive said the district assembly had instituted �Operation save a life�, programme that aimed at augmenting the community transport system to facilitate the movement of patients to the health centres. He said fuel and other logistics had been set aside to make the programme a success and therefore directed all heads of department to be committed to the agenda.
