Female Photojournalist pushes for amendment of Act 462

Foundation for Female Photojournalists (FFP), a pro-democracy group, is lobbying Government to initiate moves for the amendment of the Local Government Act 462 so that it could withstand the test of time. Miss Esinam Adu-Gyamfi, the Programmes Co-ordinator of FFP, told GNA that the group has submitted amendment proposals to the Local Government and Rural Development Ministry. She said the group was also advocating better remunerations for assembly members and that a good package would motivate more people with expertise to contest the district assembly election. Miss Adu-Gyamfi called for the election of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives to make them more accountable to the people. She said the present practice whereby Chief Executives are appointed by the President makes it difficult for the people to demand accountability from them. Miss Adu-Gyamfi urged the assemblies to ensure that adequate data on stool lands, licensing, property and basic rates, their main sources of income were compiled to boost the collection of internal revenue for development.
