US Ambassador To Ghana Lied - Hopeson Adorye

Following the statement from the United States government that it consulted Nana Akufo-Addo, leader and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) before the infamous transfer of the Guantanamo bay detainees to Ghana, a member of the party communication team has described it as a palpable lie.

“The Foreign Minister and this Embassy consulted about informing other stakeholders and so we did talk to Akufo-Addo before the transfer happened,” US Ambassador to Ghana Robert Jackson told some editors last Friday.

Ambassador Jackson added “after the transfer happened we met with a variety of religious, civil societies and political leaders. I personally met with catholic bishop conference and archbishop Duncan Williams and some of his top leadership…and I think that people now understand what happened better.”

But Hopeson Yaovi Adorye wants the US Ambassador to Ghana, Robert Jackson to come again with this statement because it puts the US Embassy in a spot of lies as the Flagbearer and leader of NPP, Nana Akufo-Addo was never consulted in the first place, but rather was informed after the Gitmo 2 detainees were already in the country.

“The US Ambassador is a liar because Nana Akufo-Addo was never consulted; they only came to inform him after the two Gitmo detainees have found foot in the country. Consultation to seek his opinion is different from informing him what has already been done,” he chided.

He however insisted that Nana Akufo-Addo would never have accepted the transfer of the Gitmo 2 detainees to Ghana if his opinion was sought before the transfer.

“Nana Akufo-Addo as a president would never have accepted the Gitmo 2 detainees in Ghana because it is against our policy. If the US Ambassador says he consulted Nana Akufo-Addo, then he is telling lies,” he stressed.

The opposition NPP had earlier accused government of breaching the ant-terrorism act of Ghana in accepting the two ex-Guantanamo bay prisoners in the country.

The party also demanded government to make a full disclosure of the terms and considerations involved in the deal.

However, speaking to senior editors of selected media houses, Ambassador Jackson reiterated that the detainees do not pose any security threat to the country.
