The Tamale District Magistrate Court has remanded Mariam Basheru, the women who allegedly dumped her rival’s two weeks old baby in a public toilet in Bole in the Northern Region, in police custody.
The suspect, in court yesterday, looked very calm during court proceedings.
ASP Eric Awiaden of the Bole police command told DAILY GUIDE that her docket would be sent to the Attorney General’s Office for advice.
In a short exclusive interview with DAILY GUIDE, suspect Mariam Basheru denied dumping the rival’s baby in the public toilet.
She indicated that at the time some residents accused her and arrested her, she was coming back from her boyfriend’s house and that she never went to the ex-boyfriend’s place.
It would be recalled that Mariam Basheru, 25, was arrested by the Bole police in the Northern Region for allegedly dumping a two-week-old baby in a public toilet in the area.
Ibrahim Iddrusu, the deceased two weeks old baby, was outdoored on 16th April, 2016 at Zongo Number One near the Bole market.
The mother of the child, Ajata Osman, told DAILY GUIDE that she went to her brother-in-law’s house, which is close to their house, to charge her phone but on returning home she realised her baby was nowhere to be found.
According to her, she went to the police station to make a complaint and on her way back to the house, she saw a crowd around a public toilet. She said some people told her they saw someone coming out of the public toilet but they suspected the person and so decided to check around it. Ajata said when she got closer to the pit, she saw her baby inside the toilet pit.
ASP Eric Awiaden of the Bole police command, who confirmed the incident to DAILY GUIDE, said the suspect was a former girlfriend to the deceased’s father and that they had a child of about three years.
He said the mother of the deceased baby said a day before the incident, the suspect came to the house asking of the husband, adding that according to the husband, the suspect always came to him if there was a problem concerning their child.
ASP Eric Awiaden indicated that the baby was finally found at about 9am at the public toilet in the area and added that some residents arrested the suspect and handed her over to the police.
According to him, the police were still investigating the matter because the suspect denied committing the crime.
