The Communications Director of the opposition New Patriotic Party [NPP] Nana Akomea says the ruler of the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II must be commended for his advice to his fellows who publicly engage in active politics.

According to him, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s comments affirms that the act by some chiefs is against the constitution – “The constitution speaks against chiefs in active politics.”

Speaking at a special Akwasidae ceremony commemorating his 17 years on the Golden Stool - Otumfuo Osei Tutu II asked chiefs to desist from openly declaring their support for political parties ahead of the November polls.

He warned of dire consequences for chiefs who continually meddle in partisan politics – according to him, chiefs who meddle in partisan politics are faced with challenges in their administration of the people who belong to different political parties.

The ‘powerful’ king noted that, traditional rulers have a responsibility to protect the sanctity of chieftaincy institution by remaining neutral in their dealings with politicians.

His comments comes after some chiefs declare their support to President John Dramni Mahama ahead of the upcoming polls during a tour to their township.

Speaking on NEAT FM’s morning show Ghana Montie Nana Akomea was of a view that, the chiefs have every right to thank the president for a development project situated in their town – “but it’s unlawful to pledge your support in public. That isn’t right. The law is against that.”

“It’s disgusting when chiefs does that. As politicians we must all kick against that,” he added.

Then young Barima Kwaku Duah ascended the Golden Stool in 1999 to succeed the late Asantehene, Otumfuo Opoku Ware II.

Sunday’s event was attended by chiefs, government officials and representatives of various political parties.

President John Mahama in his address commended Asanteman and the Asantehene for his leadership role.
