The Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Haruna Iddrissu, has charged the Fair Wages and Salaries commission to institute a regime that will make the public sector attractive to professionals with specialized knowledge and critical skills.
He lamented the fact that the public sector did not attract top professionals into its ranks as compared to the private sector.
Mr. Idrissu thus implored the commission to take immediate steps to create a proper structure to rope in such talents into government institutions and agencies.
Speaking at the inauguration of the new board members of the commission, Haruna Iddrisu reminded them of their mandate to attract and retain highly skilled personnel in the public sector.
“My attention has been drawn to one major function which is to develop a mechanism within the public service salary system to attract and retain critical skill. This a fundamental challenge and many persons with requisite skills are not attracted into the public sector and public service.”
He stressed the importance of this mandate further saying, “We need to find answers to this and find a way so that Ghanaians who are adequately trained would want to render public service by working for public institutions.”
Mr. Iddrisu further urged the grievances committee of the Fair Wages Commission to put in place measures to address the situation and supplement the efforts of his Ministry.
“The grievances committee of the commission is an important committee that I will encourage to take an urgent look at it and put it in place. I am sure the Ministry of Employment, Ministry of Finance compensation division are working at it and I am sure it will give me some breathing space.”
