Interpretation Is Okay...I'm Just Not A Great Fan - Presidential Staffer

Many Ghanaians have expressed their disgust and disappointment over the new logo of the Electoral Commission (EC).

Charlotte Osei and the EC came under intense pressure after they decided to change the logo of the commission.

While some have said the logo is not original, of poor quality and does not communicate the functions of the commission, others have said the timing of the introduction of the new logo is improper since the EC has more pressing issues such as the tussle over the voters register to attend to.

At a ceremony in Accra Tuesday, April 26, 2016, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mrs Charlotte Osei defended the Commission's decision to stick to the new logo. Explaining the meaning of the logo, Charlotte Osei said the blue in the circle represents unity and also represents stability and independence of the commission; while, the inward moving arrows reflect the coming together of the people of Ghana to select their political leaders.

Adding his voice to the debate, Presidential staffer, James Agyenim Boateng says even though he likes the interpretation of the logo, he is not ‘a great fan of it’.

“We should not bastardize the electoral commission because that is what we have. We can disagree with the logo but we should not bastardize the commission. There are more worrying; pressing issues in the country that we need to deal with and not a logo. I think the interpretation is okay. I am just not a great sign of the new logo; maybe it’s because I am used to the old logo but I like the significance”
