Former President Jerry John Rawlings wants members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to “remove the log in our own eyes” before labelling anybody or group of people as tribalistic or ethnocentric.

Dzifa Attivor, former embattled Transport Minister who resigned a couple of months ago in connection with an overpriced bus branding scandal, charged party members at a recent NDC rally at Wodoaba in the Volta Region, to retain the governing party in power in order to prevent herself and other NDC bigwigs from the region from going to jail under an NPP government.

“When the NPP came to power in 2001, a lot of our people were sent to prison; Victor Selormey, Dan Abordakpui, and so on, was imprisoned. Was it because no other persons committed crime in Ghana? But it was only Ewes that they jailed.

"I want to entreat you not do anything for me and Fiifi Kwetey go to prison. It lies with you all to ensure that no Ewe person goes to prison. So I am pleading with you to work hard and deliver the 120 thousand vote target for the party in the constituency,” she said.

Clearly not enthused by the tribal comments spewed by Madam Attivor, the former military leader, in a strongly worded statement issued Wednesday, entreated members of the ruling party to, before "making such unfortunate statements, remove the log in our own eyes".

"I find it distasteful that aside making ethnocentric references accusing the NPP Presidential candidate of being tribalistic, she also insinuated that because I was the Founder of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the electorate in the Volta Region should vote for the party on that basis.

"Before making such unfortunate statements let’s remove the logs in our own eyes," the statement read.

Imploring Ghanaians "not to allow immature behaviour and pronouncements to cloud their judgement", he warned that as the nation draws closer to the next general polls, "ALL PARTIES involved" in the electioneering process must "base their arguments and campaign rhetoric on the truth and desist from emotional and non-factual statements, especially where my name has to be mentioned."

"As we draw closer to the next Presidential and Parliamentary elections we all as Ghanaians expect ALL PARTIES involved in the process to base their arguments and campaign rhetoric on the truth and desist from emotional and non-factual statements, especially where my name has to be mentioned.

I implore the electorate not to allow immature behaviour and pronouncements to cloud their judgement," the statement partly read.
