Peace Ritual Enacted In Bunkpurgu

The Jamong and Jafouk families in the Bunkpurugu-yunyoo district on Sunday performed blood burial to institute peace and unity among both families.

The blood burial which is a tradition performed between two families coming into an agreement to cease hostilities and live in harmony is done by sacrificing sheep, cows, dogs and some other animals to cleanse the land.

It is believed that any family that does not uphold the tradition and continues to fight in the community will be punished severely by the gods of the land.

When DAILY GUIDE visited the area, the paper witnessed both families engaged in fun games while others were seen walking together through the main streets in the community signifying reconciliation between the two families. The activities were organized by the Roman Catholic Church in Bunkpurugu for the families.

Speaking to DAILY GUIDE, the Paramount Chief of Bunkpurugu Alhaji Abuba Nasinmong said, the conflict that erupted in the area was a thing of the past saying both the Jamong and Jafouk families are more united than ever.

He indicated that the Jamong family has a position in his palace and that he is ever ready to receive them in his palace to play a role in developing the area.

The Chief urged the people of Bunkpurugu-yunyoo to surrender any weapon in their possession to the authorities.

The spokesperson for the Jamong family, Elisha Naan told DAILY GUIDE that the conflict in the area affected so many people especially children who were not able to go to school.

He indicated that conflict is not a good thing and anyone thinking about it only wants to destroy life and property; depriving the area of development.

Mr. Elisha Naan stated the two families now do not know what to do with the weapons they bought.

“The weapons should be sold to the government so that we can use the money to educate our children.”

He stressed that both families knew the significance of the blood burial and so there was no need to continue keeping those weapons.

He advised the youth that they are the future leaders of the country and so they should respect the blood burial to avoid any punishment or curse on them.
