The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has urged religious bodies, residents and drinking bars to obey the ban on drumming and noise-making from May 2 to June 2 to ensure that peace and harmony prevail.
It said the ban was to enable the Ga Traditional Council to observe their cultural rites prior to the celebration of the Homowo Festival.
This was in a statement signed by Mr Sam Ayeh-Datey, the Metropolitan Co-ordinating Director, and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Wednesday.
It said during the period of the ban the usual form of worship should be confined to the premises of churches and mosques and noise levels must be minimised to the lowest limits possible.
“The Christian community, Muslim community and the traditional authorities must show respect to one another and restrain their followers from making derogatory and inflammatory remarks about the beliefs and practices of the other,” it said.
The statement directed that the positioning of loud speakers outside the premises of churches, mosques, pubs, funerals and other social gathering is prohibited and that roadside evangelists were to cease their activities during the period.
It said all political parties and keep-fit clubs were to minimise their noise levels if they embarked on outdoor activities.
“Apart from the task force which consists of AMA personnel, the Police Service and representatives from the Traditional and Christian councils, no other person or group of persons should be seen or found enforcing the abatement of noise in the Metropolis,” the statement said.
