Nurses at the Yendi Municipal Hospital have embarked on a sit-down strike in protest of non-payment of their salaries by hospital management.
The staff and enrolled nurses, numbering 33, in a statement said hospital management had failed to pay them for the past eight to nine months for their services.
“We are not asking for increment in salaries, we are only demanding what we worked for,” Salifu Issah, secretary of the nurses said.
He said the nurses were enrolled in April 2015, but only received between one to three months salary arrears in February 2016.
“I received only one month salary arrears, hospital management says they have done their part by submitting our forms but we are yet to receive our money,” Mr Issah added.
He said the staff had exhausted all the avenues and given their employers enough space to address their plight, but hospital management has still not addressed their salary issue, hence the sit down strike.
“The leadership of the affected nurses has made series of complaints to our employers and the various institutions who play a pivotal role in salary payment, but unfortunately it did not yield dividends,” he said.
Mr Issah indicated that in January 2016, both the regional and national executives of the Ghana Registered Nurses Association (GRNA) had a meeting and assured them that they will facilitate the resolution, but till date nothing has been done about it.
