3 Grabbed With Ammunition

Eight hundred rounds of AAA ammunition bound for Bunkpurugu in the Northern Region have been intercepted by the Kintampo police in the Brong-Ahafo Region.

The ammunition, packed in four boxes and on board a Kumasi-Bunkpurugu bound Tata bus, were intercepted by a police patrol team.

Suuku Kombat, who was allegedly transporting the bullets to the Northern Region, reportedly mentioned one Soodoin Konlan, a farmer at Mambarugu near Bunkpurugu, as the owner of the cartridges.

The police proceeded to Mambarugu and arrested Soodoin, who claimed ownership of the cartridges but said he was going to retail them to residents, though he has no licence to do that kind of business. He has since been arrested together with Suuku Kombat and the driver of the vehicle, Konlan Kambele, to help in further investigations.

Briefing the media at the Brong-Ahafo Regional Police Headquarters after Soodoin Konlan and the notorious armed robber, Kwaku Yeboah – who escaped from the B/A Regional Hospital (though he was under police guard) but was re-arrested three days ago as he was being hosted by a farmer – had been paraded for the public to identify, ASP Christopher Tawiah said the police were not taking chances at all, especially as the police administration is aware of a confusion in the Bunkpurugu area.

He said further investigation was ongoing to establish the actual purpose for which the ammunition were being transported saying, “they will soon be arraigned before court.”

Residents in the Sunyani municipality trooped to the regional police headquarters to catch a glimpse of Yeboah and his host who were arrested at Kwatire after he had absconded from the hospital. Implements, including one locally manufactured pistol, 4 live cartridges, one bayonet, a kitchen knife, one G3 ammunition and a pair of handcuffs keys were retrieved from them and were on display.

ASP Christopher Tawiah, B/A Police PRO, said the regional police administration believed Yeboah and his accomplices were among a gang that had been terrorizing (robbing) residents lately in the municipality. Some members of the public were able to identify Yeboah as the one who came to their shops pretending to be buying items and pulled a gun on them.
