CPR Should Be On Hard Surfaces - GRCS

The Acting National First Aid Coordinator of the Ghana Red Cross Society (GRCS), Ernest Nyame-Annan has urged health practitioners to practice CPR on hard surfaces instead of soft.

CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is a lifesaving technique which is useful in many emergencies especially where someone’s breathing has stopped; for instance heart attack or near drowning.

Most of the nurses and doctors in Ghana administer CPR on hospital beds which have soft surfaces and this according to the National First Aid Coordinator does not help the patients.

“We have realised that most hospitals do CPR on beds with soft surfaces and that is often not so effective... So to get it very effective it should be on a hard surface....” Mr Nyame Annan said.

This was made known at a two-day UN training made up of UNDP, UNICEF, WHO, UNESCO, International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and FAO.

After the training, the GRCS made a donation to the Ghana Prisons Service. They donated first aid kits to the officers after training them in first aid.
