Minister Advises Sayeegu Factions To Make Peace

Mr Abdallah Abubakari, Northern Regional Minister has advised the two clans fighting at Sayeegu, a community near Bunkpurugu to resort to civil processes such as the House of Chiefs or the courts to resolve their differences.

He condemned the shooting at Sayeegu, about a month ago, leading to the killing of two people and burning of a number of houses.

He said much as both clans might have legitimate concerns, there is no need to use violence as means of achieving their aims.

Mr Abubakari gave the advice at a meeting with the Chief of Sayeegu and Bawk Chief and their elders at Bunkpurugu on Sunday to understand their differences and how best both of them could ensure peace at Sayeegu.

The Minister was accompanied by members of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), who visited the Sayeegu community, which was deserted because of the violence.

The Chief of Sayeegu, who is from the Tamong Clan, has demanded that the people of the Bawk Clan living at Sayeegu, should pay allegiance to him but the Bawk Clan, led by its chief, has refused to obey the demands of the Sayeegu Chief.

Mr Abubakari warned that if violence takes place at the area over the issue, both chiefs would be arrested and prosecuted.

He said security measures would be reinforced especially since the country would go to the polls on November 7, hence the need for the maintenance of law and order to enable residents to attend to their various activities.

Naa Singir Peter Suuk, Chief of Sayeegu, who is from the Tamong Clan, demanded that the Chief of Sambruk, who is from the Bawk Clan, respect him as chief of the area (Sayeegu) or relocate to his community (Sambruk) to rule over his people there.

Naa Osmanu Pokabiuk, Chief of Sambruk vowed not to leave Sayeegu, saying his grandfathers had lived there with former chiefs of Sayeegu without incident.

The Minister later visited Naa Alhaji Abuba Nasinmong, Paramount Chief of Bunkpurugu, and his former rivals from the Jamong Family and commended them for resolving their decade-long conflict.

He gave the assurance that REGSEC would recommend the lifting of the curfew imposed on the Bunkpurugu town if the peace is sustained.

The Minister, paid a courtesy call on Nayiri Naa Mahami Bohagu, Overlord of Mamprugu to brief him on what REGSEC is doing about the Sayeegu situation.

Nayiri Naa Bohagu commended government for its efforts at ensuring peace in the communities and urged feuding factions to choose the path of peace to resolve their differences.
