Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mike Oquaye Jnr. has implored the Inspector General of Police (IGP) John Kudalor to reconsider the decision of the Ghana Police Service to block social media.

The Police Service announced that they want to block social media access by Ghanaians during the November 7 elections.

According to the Police administration, due to the rampant use of social media by lots of Ghanaians and the abuse of it, the administration is considering to cut access to social media in order to prevent mayhem during the general elections.

But some Ghanaians have registered their displeasure with such decision because to them, it's an infringement of their freedom.

Lawyer Ace Ankomah, in an interview on Okay FM's 'Ade Akye Ebia' Monday morning, appealed to the Police not to block social media because it could serve as a good avenue for the Police to monitor issues during the elections.

He told the host that blocking social media is not an antidote for violence-free elections.

Touching on the issue on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo', Mike Oquaye Jnr. shared similar views stating that should the IGP authorize the blocking of social media "he will be remembered as the worst IGP in the history of Ghana."

His reasons were that the Police administration cannot juxtapose Ghana with countries like North Korea and Bangladesh which have made their social media inaccessible to their citizens.

This, he stated, is because the situations in the abovementioned countries differ from Ghana's and so the countries cannot be a justification for what the Police want to do.

He cautioned the Police not to use a "backward solution for modern problems," adding that "freedom of speech is better than curtailment of it."
