The Executive Director of the National Service Scheme, Vincent Senam Kuagbenu �Our attention has been drawn to some incongruous deals going on within the National Service Scheme and involving service personnel but I want to say that those deals are of the past,� said at a press briefing held recently in Accra.
He said his office had been notified about some faceless fraudsters who take money from to-be service personnel with the false promise of securing jobs for them in banks and other big and known companies. He cautioned that the Scheme will not tolerate that hanky-panky behaviour adding that �nobody can get you any job of this kind� since the postings were done as a result of a meticulous process of placing skills with academic capabilities.
He explained that not even the user-agencies can offer places to service personnel. According to him, they (user-agencies) did not make recommendations but rather sent their request and left the deployment to the Scheme. Addressing issues of doubt concerning the postings, the ED noted that expectant national service personnel who had doubts as to whether their service year would be smooth, comfortable and rewarding will soon see all their doubts erased.
At a press conference held to release officially the postings for the 2009/2010 service year, Mr Vincent Senam Kuagbenu said �we have noticed the challenges facing service personnel and so we have done our home work very well to ensure that such problems and irregularities are avoided.�
For this service year, Mr Kuagbenu said the Scheme had made new introductions into the existing programmes. He said in spite of the on going debate on the posting of medical personnel for service, �the Scheme has posted 2,502 medical graduates to be rolled on for service�. This action he said was aimed at promoting health care and delivery nationwide especially at the district level.
Rural people he said had a lot of problems with regard to accessing quality health care and so this would provide them with an opportunity to do so.
In a bid to help with make up the several numbers of teachers who shift from teaching to other professions, the ED said because the scheme was committed to supporting the education sector and improving upon the quality of education and learning at all levels had deployed 20,000 volunteer personnel and 13,951 mandatory personnel to support the sector.
As part of the Scheme�s new initiatives, and in a bid to strengthen government agencies for the first time, has deployed 230 service personnel to support Members of Parliament as research assistants. �They are to assist the MPs in the area of research, monitoring and evaluation�, he disclosed.
