The Ashanti Regional Chief Imam has threatened to ban from public preaching any Muslim, who by their actions and conduct, incite tension between the Ahlussunah Wal-Jamaa’a and Tijanniya sects.
Sheikh Abdul Mumin Haroun asked that they all upheld Islamic ethics and avoided anything indecorous and tasteless.
The warning comes amid escalating tension between followers of the two sects at Aboabo- Number-Two in Kumasi – triggered by a recent religious comment on facebook.
Over the past couple of weeks, both sides had engaged in “war of words” particularly, on the radio and social media, highlighting the doctrinal fault lines.
The swift response of the police prevented what could have been a nasty confrontation in the community, last week.
Sheikh Haroun told a meeting of the Inter-Party Dialogue Committee, held under the auspices of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) that the Regional Police Command had met leaders of the various sects to discuss the way forward, to bring calm.
He stated that “Islam stands for peace. The religion is not about bloodshed or war”.
He condemned the unfortunate development and said, coming just about two weeks to the start of the holy month of Ramadan, it gave cause to worry.
Sheikh Haroun used the platform to counsel politicians not to manipulate the youth for political mischief.
They should not hide behind the young people to pursue any evil agenda as the nation prepared to go to the polls.
The Reverend Kofi Amfo-Akonnor, Regional Chairman of the Christian Council of Ghana, reminded everybody to act responsibly to sustain the peace and security of the society.
