The youth have been advised to shun inflammatory statements that have the tendency to cause division among the citizenry as the nation prepares for Election 2016.
Ms Theo Sowa, Chief Executive Officer of African Women’s Development Fund, said hate speech leads to wars, hence the need for all to avoid insulting words that would trigger hatred to mar the upcoming elections.
She made the call at a peace campaign launch in Accra dubbed: “No Hate Speech Africa Campaign,” organised by Concerned African Youth Forum towards a peaceful election 2016.
Ms Sowa said conflict is one of the biggest causes of conflict on the Africa Continent, with some neighboring countries having witnessed unrest leading to loss of lives and property.
“Ghana should not travel that path,” she said.
She noted that in the age of social media, the youth who are the users of these platforms carry with them a mandate to inspire and spread positive change.
Mr Michael Opeyemi Ige, Executive Director, Concerned African Youth Forum, said the Concerned African Youth Forum, is adding its voice to the global outcry to get the message across that you can express yourself without being an extremist.
Representatives of the various political parties who shared a message to the youth urged them to use words that would bring unity instead of division.
They also pledged to maintain peace in the country during and after the November 7 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
