Don't Attack Police Officers Controlling Traffic, Public Warned

The Greater Accra Regional Police Command on Friday warned the public, especially drivers, who attack police officers detailed to control traffic in Accra that they would be arrested and prosecuted. A statement signed by Chief Inspector Kwaku Dompreh, Public Relations Officer of the Regional Police Command, said such attacks constituted offence punishable by law. It noted that police officers detailed to control traffic in areas such as Legon, Mallam Junction, Accra Central, Nima Highway and Dzowulu had been attacked, ridiculed or molested by motorists and pedestrians. The police said such acts embarrassed and tarnished the image of the Service, government and the country. It also demoralises those officers detailed to perform such legal and legitimate duties of maintaining law and order. The statement said police officers who performed such duties were human beings and therefore fallible, but that did not justify such attacks on them. It advised the public to report police officers who misconduct themselves to the police authorities, using their names and numbers worn on their uniforms for action to be taken against them.
