On the occasion of World Environment Day (WED), Voltic (GH) Limited (Voltic) joined two basic  schools within the Medie community in the Ga West Municipality to undertake a cleanup exercise and an environmental care dialogue at the Voltic factory in Medie.

About 150 pupils from the Meyah Preparatory School and Joy2theWorld International Christian Academy came together to clean, weed, and desilt drains in a community near the Voltic plant.

The commemorative event forms part of Voltic’s drive towards sustainable environmental management and its aim of producing environmental ambassadors especially in children.

Cordie Aziz, Executive Director of Environment360, Voltic’s partner in the Evolve PET recycling project, gave a short presentation on environmental consciousness.  She was emphatic that “we need to be conscious about the way we use plastics and how we dispose of them.  

As young persons, it is important that you learn the habit of environmental cleanliness so you will grow to appreciate that an abuse of the environment in anyway, especially littering with plastic is harmful to sustainable living”.

Ms. Aziz also indicated that Evolve has been nominated for a SEED award which is an encouragement to Voltic and its partners.  She added that “this recognition will urge us on to do more for society”.

In an interaction with the pupils after the clean-up exercise, the Commercial Manager of Voltic, Raymond Mensah Gbetivi, noted that Voltic believes that shared prosperity is both the route to success for businesses and a core contribution to society.  

“Evolve has proven to be a successful waste management project, with special focus on the segregation of plastic waste; a very fundamental concern in the recycling value chain.  Evolve  has since its launch in October 2015, collected and recycled 5 metric tonnes of pet bottles; a remarkable feat for us and our partners, Environment360, the Government and the Plastic Waste Management Program of Ghana. 

As we commemorate WED, we are fulfilling our promise to educate more than 10,000 children to help inculcate in them the importance of recycling in support of Goal 6 of the UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development’’ he concluded.

The natural mineral water bottling company understands that the long-term sustainability of its business depends on growing economies, healthy communities and responsible use of scarce natural resources.  

These reasons are behind Voltic’s resource management programme in its operations; sponsorship of the annual Nkwanta Primary School conservation programme and the launch of the Evolve plastic recycling project.
