A young man drowns in a stream

A 25 year old man on Monday drowned in a stream near Bukere, a suburb of Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region. The deceased, Ayine Azebira went swimming at about 1720 hours, and after diving failed to come out of the water. The Regional Police Public Relation Officer, Chief Inspector Thomas Agbanyo, told the Ghana News Agency that when the Police heard of the incident, they rushed to the scene and with the help of divers Azebira was found and brought out of the water with blood oozing out of his nose. He was immediately rushed to the Bolgatanga Hospital, were he was pronounced dead. The body has since been deposited at the mortuary awaiting post-mortem. Chief Inspector Agbanyo said there was no suspicion of foul play, but investigation was being carried out. He cautioned young people who did not know how to swim to desist from attempting, since the streams and rivers were full and sometimes had strong currents that could easily carry them away. The Municipal Crime Officer Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mr. Kwame Owusu Sekyere, noted that the crime rate had reduced and commended the people in the Municipality and the entire Region for helping the police to achieve this.
