Yeji Boat Owners Take Volta Lake Tree Stump Removal Into Their Own Hands

Following a boat disaster on the Volta River, Boat Owners in Yeji have started removing tree stumps in the water body despite plans by the Pru District Security Committee (DISEC) and government to remove the stumps.

The latest accident on the river involved a canoe, carrying 67 persons. It capsized after hitting a tree stump, resulting in the death of six children.

Three other passengers remain unaccounted for.

Secretary of the Boat Owners, John Kpeli speaking to Adom News said in order to prevent another ferry accident, his outfit has taken the lead in facilitating safe transportation after a series of accidents on the lake this year.

He said in a bid to make easy navigation, the owners have hired hands to go under the lake to remove the stumps, starting from the Krachi area of the lake.

He said their efforts are however being hampered by a lack of funds and human resources to facilitate the entire job.

On his part, the Pru District Chief Executive, Emmanuel Kwame Opoku says the authorities have, through the MP Kwabena Donkor, submitted a petition in Parliament for government assistance in removing the stumps.

He added that since the incidents, the Navy has intensified surveillance and operators are adhering to safety rules as well.
