Mother, 19, Beats Baby To Death

A nineteen-year-old mother, Esther Agyei, is reported to have beaten her nine-month old son to death at Ameduma Adankwame in the Atwima Nwabiagya District of the Ashanti Region. Esther is said to have used a stick to kill the baby on the grounds that she was not capable of taking care of the child due to poor finances.

The remains of the baby, David Boateng Junior, have been deposited at the morgue of the Afari Community Hospital pending autopsy.

Esther, who is accused of committing murder, is currently in police custody.

The Abuakwa District Police Commander, Superintendent Joseph Nyaaba, who confirmed the news to Graphic Online said some community members of Ameduma Adankwame lodged a formal complaint with the Akropong Police on Tuesday night after suspecting Esther of killing her own baby.

He said Esther was arrested and the case was later referred to the Abuakwa District Police Command for investigations.

Caution statement

Superintendent Nyaaba said in her caution statement, Esther confirmed the death of her baby boy but denied killing him. He said she had written that the baby was anaemic and that she had taken him (the baby) to the Koforidua Maternity Clinic for medical attention but he was later referred to Afari Community Hospital where he died on arrival.

The police commander said as part of investigations, the police were monitoring the autopsy report on the baby to ascertain whether the baby was beaten or died of anaemia.
