Obscenity On The Airwaves and Screens: Who Protects The Vulnerable?

Primarily and originally, the very concept for which Television and Radio stations came into force was to inform, educate and entertain. Really in the past, music played on radio, and also local films and folktales shown on television were very educative and highly entertaining. This truly depicted our rich socio-cultural values, traditions, taboos and other social norms. Regrettably, the trend now has changed and most of the films and music clips shown on T.V and also played on radio are becoming full of obscenity. The big question is, are we not pricked about the impact of such films and music on the youth and children? And who is to be blamed? Is it the Radio, T.V. stations or the musician who churns out such vulgarity as music? And what efforts are being made to curb these kinds of indecency being loudly flaunted and promoted on our screens and airwaves? It is also a common sight to behold youngsters humming and sometimes even singing along to these tunes. But seriously, do these young ones really understand the lyrics of the song they are singing? PEACEFMs Reporter, Leslie McCarthy, went to town and captured on tape the voices of some of these kids happily singing hit songs, but which are largely profane. If this is the legacy we are bequeathing to our children, then it must be frowned upon and outrightly condemned. Just listen to the audio attachment and make your own judgment.
