An average of 24 people are knocked down daily in Accra, according to 2016 provisional road traffic crash and casualty statistics released by the Accra Central Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.
 
The Commanding Officer of the Accra Central MTTD, ACP Anderson Fosu-Ackaah who made the revelation, said the current high spate of avoidable road crashes leading to numerous deaths, injuries and destruction of properties places a huge responsibility not only on police personnel but also requires the general public to help curb the menace.

He was speaking at the annual West Africa Security Services Association celebrations (WASSA) of the Accra Central MTTD on Sunday.

As parts of efforts to clampdown on traffic violations in the city, he said the Accra Central MTTD has unveiled a special unit dubbed the "Red Light Team" who are solely dedicated to tackling the menace of traffic offence.

According to him, the operation of the Red Light Team is gradually changing the behaviour of both drivers and motor riders who are in the habit of jumping the red light.

He said the team alone cannot be everywhere and thus commended Graphic Online for joining the fight against traffic offences and urged all well-meaning Ghanaians to help in halting the abuse of traffic regulations.

“In order to achieve appreciable level of reduction in road crashes and fatalities on our roads, particular emphasis should be placed on education and enforcement of traffic laws and regulations,” he added.

ACP Fosu-Ackaah used the occasion to call on political parties to advise their sympathizers and supporters to observe Road Traffic Regulations during the campaign period ahead of the 2016 elections, especially the use of unregistered motorbikes, DV plate and overloading of party supporters from one location to the other.

He added that the law will not be relaxed during the period hence any offender will be dealt with according to the law.
