Former president John Agyekum Kufour has refuted claims that his administration was unable to solve the power crisis during his term in office.

According to the former president, such talks are only political and not substantial and that the government of the National Democratic Congress would be better served focusing on how to solve the problem. Several government communicators have blamed the New Patriotic Party (NPP) under Kufuor, who they say, failed to augment the country’s power generation capacity, during their eight year-rule . 

Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr. Ekow Spio Garbrah told Citi News in June: “I’ve said we’ve had challenges for instance in the power sector and this is not a secret and the challenges in the power sector were not created by the NDC. They were created by governments like the NPP who during their era hardly added any megawatt of power to Ghana’s total power production capacity.”

However, John Kufuor said after almost eight years in power if the current government has not been able to solve the power problem then they do not have a solution. “It’s just political talks. Eight years should be long enough for anybody with solutions to show. The current regime has been in power for close to eight years so if they are not having the solution, we shouldn’t accept shifting of blams onto earlier regimes,”President Kufour told Accra-based GHone TV.

President John Mahama recently acknowledged that there were challenges with power supply in the country but stopped short of declaring that it marked a return to load-shedding.

We are not declaring load shedding; I believe things will normalize but we are taking steps everyday to ensure that Ghana has security when it comes to power,” he emphasized.

The Power Ministry echoed the president’s comments stating that the current power outages are as a result of temporary difficulties caused by the delay in the supply of light crude among other things.
