The much-awaited National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chiana-Paga Constituency primary has been rescheduled from today to Saturday, July 16, 2016.
More than 12,000 delegates were expected to vote in the primary that was put on hold at the time all the 15 constituencies in the Upper East Region were expected to conduct their primaries simultaneously on November 21, 2015.
According to the Upper East Regional Secretary of the NDC, Mr Donatus Akamugre, the primary was rescheduled partly because of the delay in the printing and arrival of some electoral materials and an upcoming tour of the region by President John Dramani Mahama.
Feverish preparations had been put in place for President John Mahama's “Accounting to the People” tour of the region yesterday.
Mr Akamugre stated that “we had to postpone the primary to July 16, 2016, due to the delay in the printing of the electoral materials. We were expecting the materials to have reached the constituency by Friday but as we speak they are yet to finish the printing and all other things."
He pointed out that “when the materials arrive, the Electoral Commission (EC) will also have to check them to ensure that all is set for the primary and so we needed to postpone it to give the EC more time to do its work effectively”.
The Deputy Communications Director of the party in the Chiana-Paga Constituency, Mr Ayeoduko Akobulgo-Zotigelba, for his part, indicated that he was also informed about the postponement of the primary but said he had no details of why it was postponed.
When contacted, the Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mr James Arthur-Yeboah, indicated that he had not been informed by the EC in Accra about any Chiana-Paga elections on Saturday, July 09, 2016.
