Help Ensure Peaceful Elections, Senior Citizens Urged

Mr Albert Abongo, the Upper East Regional Minister, has pleaded with senior citizens in the country to help ensure that peaceful elections are held in November.

“As senior citizens full of wisdom and experience you can help contribute to ensuring peaceful general elections. We are therefore pleading with you to utilize your wisdom to help maintain peace so as to deepen the democratic process of the country” he said.

Mr Abongo said this during a party in Bolgatanga, organized by the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council for the elderly, as part of the Republic Day celebrations.

He urged all in active service to prepare adequately towards their pension so as to avoid encountering many difficulties when they go on pension.

Among the key concerns raised at the function was lifestyle of many of the youth in the region- the abuse of alcohol and drugs, the poor educational standards, the delay of the School Feeding grants for second cycle institutions, the erratic rainfall and the land tenure system among others.

A former Regional Minister Mr Donald Adabare Adabre called on parents to take active interest in the performance of their children in school.

Mr Adabre, who is also an Agriculturalist, urged farmers in the region to ensure that they planted early maturing crops since the rains started late this year, so as to avoid losses.

Mr Rockson Bukari, a former Municipal Chief Executive for the Bolgatanga Municipal, said the land tenure system had affected government projects and urged the senior citizens to educate community members not to hesitate to give out lands for development projects.

The event which attracted a large number of the elderly from all the thirteen districts of the Region was also used to present gifts to some of them who had contributed significantly to the development of the Region and the Country.
