The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has stepped up its engagement with the people to get everybody to act appropriately for the smooth conduct of this year’s polls.
Mr. Alhassan Yakubu, the Ashanti Regional Director of the Commission, said helping all to do the right things and play by the rules of the game would remove needless political tension.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi, he indicated that the success of the polls was dependent on the conduct of all the actors.
He said it had already met with identified youth and women groups, religious bodies and the political parties. Additionally, it had been holding community durbars to sensitize the people on their civic responsibilities.
He reminded the leadership of the political parties and their supporters to ensure clean election campaign. They should focus on policy issues and desist any shameful and reckless conduct, likely to plunge the nation into chaos. Mr. Yakubu added that their actions must be consistent with the political parties “code of conduct”.
He touched on the unacceptably high rejected ballots seen in every election and said that was also being tackled.
A total of about 251,720 ballots were rejected in the 2012 general election, representing 2.3 per cent of the total votes cast.
The NCCE Regional Director said this gave cause for concern and that there was need for increased voter education on how to thumbprint the ballot paper.
He said the Commission would continue to do everything to assist grow the nation’s multi-party democracy.
