Vice President Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur has advised graduates of tertiary institutions to see National Service as a means of acquiring experience for the job market.
He said students should not see the one year service as punishment but a platform to broaden their horizon to fully prepare themselves for employment.
The Vice President said this in Accra yesterday when he addressed the 2015/2016 service personnel who had completed their service.
He said service personnel should not use the challenges of accommodation and long distance as an excuse of not accepting their posting.
Mr Amissah-Arthur said government was aware of the challenges personnel go through and was committed to addressing the problem of accommodation and other challenges of the scheme.
He noted that asides the experiences that service personnel acquired during the service they also got the opportunity to explore the country and learn about other people’s cultures and values.
Mr. Amissah-Arthur said although it was mandatory for graduates to do their National Service, government recognised and acknowledged their efforts since they help boost the human capacity in the various sectors of the country.
The Vice President appealed to institutions especially the private sector to retain personnel who perform their duty diligently and thanked the private enterprises for their tremendous contributions to the State.
He expressed gratitude to the 2015/2016 personnel for performing their national duty and advised 2016/2017 personnel to be committed and dedicated to duty at their various posting.
The Executive Director of the National Service Scheme, Dr Michael Kpessa-Whyte disclosed that the scheme had sent a proposal to the Finance Ministry for increment in the service allowances which was being considered, adding that the increment would be communicated to personnel as soon as it was approved.
Dr Kpessa-Whyte urged personnel who had completed the service to take advantage of the six month voluntary service of the scheme especially personnel who are yet to seek employment.
