Govt Begins Subsidy Payments To CHASS

The government of Ghana has paid subsidies to headmasters of senior high schools (SHSs) who submitted information for reimbursement to the Ghana Education Service (GES), Rev. Jonathan Bettey, Public Relations Officer for the GES, has said.

The payment follows a threat issued by the Conference of Heads Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS) that they would close down their schools following government’s failure to pay subsidies.

After the threat, the Director of the GES, Jacob Kor, blamed the non-payment of the subsidies on the head teachers who failed to submit relevant data for crosschecking in order to pave the way for the payment.

Rev Bettey, said on Monday August 1 that: “We also considered the pending fees that the government had to pay, that is the subsidy and other grants. Luckily, when they (headmasters) were in [a meeting with GES] after all the issues were thrashed out, cheques were signed and they were given to the headmasters [and] executives.

“There are others who are also involved, there is the need for them to submit data to the office for us to crosscheck…all of them will be given their money.”
