Andre Ayew should be named Ghana captain, says Tanko

The former Indomitable Lions assistant coach insists that Asamoah Gyan must be relieved of his captaincy due to his injury troubles.

Retired Ghana international and former Cameroon assistant coach Ibrahim Tanko wants Avram Grant to appoint Swansea City star Andre Ayew as the Black Stars new captain following Asamoah Gyan’s unending injuries problems.

The Shanghai SIPG forward, who was appointed Ghana captain in 2013, has not played with the team since December last year, with Ayew filling the void in his absence.

“I think the captaincy should be handed over to Dede [Ayew]. Gyan has been injured for some time and if he is unable to make it to the AFCON, then I think Dede should be named as captain,” Tanko told Starr FM.

“The Ghana Football Association and Avram Grant must meet with Gyan and explain to him the reasons. Gyan is the general captain in the team but the injuries have been a problem so he needs to handover,” he added.

Ghana have qualified for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations after picking 13 points in Group H, with a game at hand against Rwanda.
