Eastern Corridor Road Abandoned . . . 7 Certificates Not Honoured, 90% Of Workers Sacked

The Eastern Corridor Road which is beige used as campaign tool for this year’s election by the ruling government has been abandoned on the blind side of Ghanaians.

The Chronicle can report on authority that the Chinese construction from working on the 45km Asikuma Kpeve section of the road has packed bag and baggage on left the site of the project, over GH₵42 million the government owes it.

Li Zhendong, project coordinator for GS International contractor for the raid project told The Chronicle that the company was financially handicapped to continue with work, due to the government’s indebtedness to it.

Li Zhendong, project coordinator for GS International, contractor for the road project, told The Chronicle that the company was financially handicapped to  continue with work, due to the government's indebtedness to it.

He said they had raised seven certificates to the government since they started work in 2013 for the money to be paid in installments, but that had not been successful.

According to Li Zhendong, the project should have been completed in 2015, but the non payment of their money had delayed the work.

Though they vacated site since June this year, he said they could finish the entire 45-kilometer stretch by September be able to pay its debt.

Work was about 65 percent complete, including the Asikuma to Peki-Todome stretch had been asphalted, Li Zhendong said, adding "we are confident in the government but the money it owes GS International is very huge and we doubt if it could be paid in this or next week," Mr. Li noted.

He said he could not assure commuters when they would return to site "because we have no money," he said rather calmly.

While GS International expected the government to settle its gargantuan debt owed it, Mr. Li cautioned motorists particularly those who enjoyed speeding and swerving potholes, to be extra careful on the uncompleted portions of the 45km road.
