CHRAJ Takes Over M&J Investigations

The Commissioner for Human Rights and Administrative Justice, Justice Francis Emile Short says his outfit has written to the British High Commission in Ghana for assistance in investigating the Mabey and Johnson bribery scandal. President John Mills has invited the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to step into the fray. The Health Minister, Dr George Sipah Yankey and Minister of State, Amadu Seidu have resigned to clear their names. They were alleged to have taken various bribes from the UK Bridge Construction firm between the 1980s and 1990s in return for Government contracts. Justice Emile Short says he expects the Attorney General and Minister of Justice to collaborate with CHRAJ in unearthing the truth. It is my expectation that whatever information is in the hands of the Attorney General would be handed over to CHRAJ which will facilitate and experdite our investigations. He said. Justice Short says the amount and type of information dug up over the case will determine the mode of investigation. When we get the information that we require, it would enable us determine whether there is the need to embark on field investigation, in other words, going to the United Kingdom or whether the information we receive is sufficient to enable us initiate an effective investigation, he told Citifm.
