Notorious Land Guard Busted

The Accra Regional police have finally apprehended a 20-year-old man believed to be a land guard who has allegedly been using an AK 47 assault rifle to terrorize residents of Denkyira, near Amanfrom, in the Greater Accra Region.

The suspect, Nii Odartey Wellington aka Kankpe, according to the police, operated with two others and shot four of their victims in some robbery operations.

He is said to have been on the police wanted list for the past five years until his arrest on August 10, 2016.

Briefing the media in Accra, ACP Timothy Yoosa Bonga, Accra Regional Police Commander, said on December 15, 2015, Odartey Wellington, together with his accomplices, interrupted a meeting being held by some family members at their house at Denkyira, wielding AK 47 rifle and other deadly weapons.

The suspects, he disclosed, fired shots indiscriminately and the bullets hit the thighs of a family member.

Two other persons sustained various degrees of injury in that attack; and the suspects fled after perpetrating the act.

The victims were rushed to the Amanfrom Government Hospital for treatment.

ACP Timothy Bonga indicated that on December 20, 2015, the suspects, led by Odartey Wellington again,  attacked another victim, subjected him to severe beatings, after which they robbed him of 20 bags of cement GH¢600.00.

On March 29, this year, the gang again attacked some residents of Denkyira at about 12:30 pm and subjected them to brutal beatings.

Not satisfied, the gang further undressed the victims and made them march through the town, according to the police commander.

They later forced the victims to kneel on stones while carrying five blocks each.

On May 19, 2016, the suspects went on rampage around 10pm in the town as they fired shots.

They also issued a threatening message to the police and residents who dared to cause their arrest.

The case was referred to the regional command for investigation on July 21, 2016, and on August 10, 2016 the police had information of Wellington’s hideout and subsequently apprehended him.

Investigation is ongoing to also bring to book his accomplices.
