A 44-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly driving a vehicle into worshippers of the Greater Fire Pentecostal International Ministry at Weija in Accra, killing one and injuring two others.
Emmanuel Amarteyfio was said to have gone to the church on Friday to collect his money owed by the Founder of the Church, Bishop Bonegas, when the tragedy occurred.
The deceased identified as Alice Doku, 58 was pronounced dead on arrival at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, while another worshiper, Georgina Antwi, 38, had her right leg amputated and Albert Kwofie, 55, sustained injuries as a result of the accident.
The Weija District Police Commander, Superintendent Osei Shaibu who confirmed the tragedy to The Ghanaian Times, said Amarteyfio told the police Bishop Bonegas invited him to come for his money on that fateful day.
The Police Commander said on August 12, at about 2pm Amarteyfio parked his vehicle on a hill top waiting for the worshippers to close from church, so that he could collect his money from Prophet Bonegas.
While waiting, he (Amarteyfio) received a call from somebody to meet him at Weija and he informed the Bishop.
Supt. Shiabu said while Amarteyfio moved his vehicle, with registration number GX 1985-15, it developed a fault and, with a loud sound from the engine, and ran into the worshipers who had then closed from the church and were on the compound.
The vehicle hit the three, who were trapped against a stationary bus belonging to the church. He said the victims were rushed to the Korle-bu Teaching Hospital, but Alice died on arrival.
Supt Shaibu stated that Kwofie had been treated and discharged while Antwi was still on admission. He said the body of the deceased had been deposited at the same hospital for autopsy.
The Police Commander said Amarteyfio had been put before an Accra Motor court and charged with careless driving and causing harm.
He said Amarteyfio had been granted bail with three sureties, one to be justified.
