Tension Mounts At Customs ...Staff Mad At Outside Recruitment

Barring any last minute decision by the high hierarchy of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), the revenue agency may witness a sit down strike by some disgruntled  staff especially the Junior Staff over allegations of failure of Management  to upgrade them after pursuing higher academic courses.

According to a Senior Staff who spoke to The New Crusading GUIDE on condition of anonymity, “the Junior Staff is not happy with recent developments where we recruit graduates to fill vacant positions as Departments such as Human Resource, Accounting, Operations etc while some of our own people have actually completed Universities with the same qualifications”.

The complaints by the Junior Staff became incessant after the Division on two different occasions this year, recruited “outside” graduates to fill some positions which had not publicly on internally declared vacant.

“The irony of the whole situation is that, when they recruit these people from ‘outside’, we the Junior Staff have to take them through training for them to come and be our immediate bosses. Have you heard a thing like that before?” a Junior Staff told this paper last week.

“Upon our recruitment, we were advised to pursue further studies so that we will be upgraded in rank and some of us heeded to that good counsel. Unfortunately, some of us have completed University for over four years yet, we have not been upgraded and all we see recruitment of ‘outsiders’ with no experience”, lamented a Staff.

The source further alleged that, the Customs Division under anonymity, through the Daily Graphic, last month advertised for persons to apply for positions such as Operations (both Senior and Junior Rank).

“I think we are not being treated fairly”, the source observed adding  that any vacant position must be advertised internally before it goes public when the suitable is not found.

Meanwhile, a source close to Management has hinted that there would be a meeting over the issue to settle it amicably before it escalates.
